William W. Purkey and David Strahan
Applying the valid and positive theory of Invitational Education to managing student behavior, Purkey and Strahan spin a most engaging treatise. Using the easy-to-identify-with metaphor of blue and orange cards, they present a color-coded approach to classroom management, one that is pure “middle school.” With dozens of specific, practical ideas in the form of “blue notes” scattered throughout, this volume is easy to read, even fun to read; but, make no mistake about it, what is presented is a very serious and thoughtful approach to improving the behavior of students in classroom situations. It does this by creating a climate that brings to the forefront the best of human nature.

Inviting Positive Classroom Discipline
124 pages, Paperback
This small volume also comes with a bonus; for although focused on discipline, readers who instill in their attitudes and actions the advocacies of Invitational Education will discover that they have, at the same time, created a classroom environment that will greatly improve instruction and student achievement! It would be a mistake to pass this book by, thinking it is just another rhetoric-rich but practice-poor program for controlling students’ behavior. Invitational Education promotes the exact opposite. It is a “doing-with” rather than a “doing to” approach to improving schools. Seldom does a resource offer so much in so few pages. Accept the invitation that is offered here.
